Table 38
Geneva, Illinois

Review Posted:

It was a lazy summer day -- midweek actually -- and the general consensus was that dinner out would be a better way to relax than dinner in...  Besides, Lauren had been suggesting for several weeks now that we try a venue that had been home to two previous restaurants (Isabella's and Citizen Kane).  Well, OK, I'll include Enye as well, although it died somewhat prematurely in an insignificant puff of smoke (no, it didn't burn; just huffed and puffed and didn't quite make it over the hill...), and Table 38 rose from its ashes not long after...

In addition to the Phoenix-like nature of the new digs, my only trepidation rose along with it: Table 38 is owned by the same folks that owned the now defunct Enye, as well as Urban Grille -- and and an experience there was one that left a lasting, albeit not memorable, impression.  But that was a different day and a different place, and I will not judge Table 38 simply because of its sibling.  (I did wonder though, why Enye appeared and disappeared so quickly from the same location.)  Besides, the last two years have been particularly unkind to restaurant owners, and I would heartily salute any who would attempt to make a go of it in what is by nature already a tough biz.  But I digress.

We arrived shortly after 6:30 pm and thought perhaps that the place was closed; this was because I at first saw no one anywhere.  Looking around, I noticed there were only two other tables that were occupied (one was ready to depart, as they were in the process of paying their check).  It was then that a young man not dressed in any particular manner of uniform -- in fat, not well-dressed at all -- approached us and queried as to whether we would like to be seated for dinner.  I always worry when I am about to be seated at prime dinner hour in a deserted restaurant...  But we were not about to change our minds at this point.

The tables themselves were quite austere
